Dunas Don Gregory

The Don

When we hear the word Don, it’s not The Godfather which comes to mind. Instead, it’s the jingle which accompanied the ads of East Midlands caravan and motorhome dealer, Don Amott back in our childhood days. Although, we’re also reminded of our honeymoon as Señor and, indeed, Señora Gran Canaria Local spent their first days of married life in the Dunas Don Gregory.

Southern comfort

You’ll find the Dunas Don Gregory in San Agustín, the first major resort you’ll hit travelling south from the island’s airport. Give or take the odd ’70s shopping centre, San Agustín’s aged well. It’s neither the buzz of neighbouring Playa del Inglés nor the bling of nearby Meloneras, but is reliably formal in an old-school fashion.

The suite life at the Dunas Don Gregory

We can’t remember the number of our honeymoon suite, but we’re pretty sure it was closer to the lift than the one we occupied during our recent stay. But everything else at the Dunas Don Gregory was more or less as we recalled. The balcony with Atlantic views and the stairs leading to the upstairs bedroom being the suite’s prominent features.

Buffet island

After resting and then freshening up for a while, we made our way down to the Dunas Don Gregory ground-floor restaurant for the dinner’s second sitting. Whilst Mrs Gran Canaria Local was restrained, as you can see from the photo, in her selection, Mr GCL went loco, filling his plate to such a degree that you were left guessing what its original colour was. Our defence was that there was so much to choose from, with the quality of the fresh produce matching its quantity.

Disclaimer: Mr and Mrs Gran Canaria Local received a complimentary one-night stay, on a half-board basis. The breakfast was as big as the dinner. So we snoozed off our excesses with an early siesta on the pool’s sunloungers. Sometimes we have to pinch ourselves that we reside in the Northern, rather than Southern, Hemisphere.
